DRAFT — not final. This privacy policy is a draft and isn't in effect yet. Highlighted items in [brackets] are still to be filled in. It isn't legal advice and may change before the app launches.

Susky Built Privacy Policy

App: Susky Built for Android, published by Susky Built

The short version

  • Susky Built is a fishing logbook that keeps your records on your phone. There is no account to create and no sign-in.
  • We don't collect your data. Your trips, catches, spots, tackle and photos are never sent to us. We have no server that receives them.
  • There are no ads, no analytics, no tracking, and no affiliate links in the app.
  • Some optional features fetch public information from outside services, such as map tiles, weather forecasts and river gauges. Those services see your device's internet (IP) address and the request, as described below.
  • You control your data. You can export it, import it, or delete it.

What we collect

Nothing. Susky Built doesn't receive, store or sell any personal information from the app. We don't run analytics, crash-reporting or advertising tools in the app, and we don't build profiles of you.

If you email us at info@suskybuilt.com, we'll see your email address and whatever you choose to send. We use it only to reply to you.

What the app stores on your phone

The app saves the following in its private storage on your device. Other apps can't read it, and it isn't sent to us.

  • Fishing records: trips, catches (species, length, weight, notes, time), bites and misses, conditions you enter, trip plans, practice notes and reflections.
  • Tackle: lures, rods, reels, line, rigs, combos, quantities and your shopping list.
  • Places: private spots you save, catch locations you choose on a map, and a "phone fix" (your GPS position) if you ask for one. Locations are private by default. They're never added to the catch cards or challenge cards you share.
  • Photos: pictures you take or choose for a lure or a catch. The app shrinks and compresses them, then saves a copy inside its own storage.
  • Saved copies of public information: the last river report, the last area forecast and lesson text, so the app works offline.
  • App settings: units, tackle grid or list view, and whether you finished the setup guide.
  • Game progress: challenge progress, and any ranks, medals or missions, are worked out on your phone from your own log. They aren't sent anywhere.
  • Safety copies: to protect against a failed save, the app keeps a copy of your previous save and, after you use a recovery option, an archive of the replaced data. Both stay on your phone.

Permissions and why we ask

The app asks for each permission only when you use the feature that needs it. You can say no and keep using everything else.

PermissionWhen it's askedWhat it's used for
Location (while using the app)Only when you tap Use my locationTakes one GPS reading so you can save a spot or catch location, or pick a forecast area. The app doesn't track you in the background or ask for background location.
CameraOnly when you choose Take photo or Scan barcodeTaking a photo of a lure or catch, or reading a tackle barcode. Barcodes are read on your phone, and no product database is contacted.
PhotosOnly when you choose Choose photoOpens Android's photo picker so you can pick one picture. The app doesn't browse your gallery.
VibrationAutomatically (no prompt)Short haptic taps when you press buttons such as "Mark a catch."
InternetAutomatically (no prompt)Only for the optional online features listed below.

The app blocks the microphone and the old shared-storage read/write permissions. It doesn't record audio, and it doesn't send notifications.

Outside services the app contacts

The app contacts these services only when you use the feature, for example by turning on the online map or tapping Load river report or Fetch area forecast. All connections use HTTPS. Every request shows the service your device's IP address and basic technical details, such as the app or browser type and the time. That's how the internet works, and we don't control what these services log. Each one handles your request under its own privacy policy:

ServiceWhenWhat it receivesPrivacy policy
OpenStreetMap tile servers (OpenStreetMap Foundation)When you tap Enable online map on a location screenThe map tiles for the area you're viewing, which can reveal the general area you're looking at (or where you are, if the map is centered on your GPS reading). It also gets your IP address and an app identifier. Your saved records aren't sent.OSMF Privacy Policy · Tile usage policy
Open-Meteo (weather forecast)When you tap Fetch area forecastThe latitude and longitude of the forecast area you chose, plus your IP address. Open-Meteo says it may keep server logs, which can include coordinates, for up to 90 days. To keep a spot private, choose a general area instead of the exact spot.Open-Meteo Terms & Privacy
U.S. Geological Survey Water Data APIWhen you tap Load / Refresh river reportA request for fixed public river gauges (Harrisburg, Sunbury, Newport, Marietta, Columbia), plus the public gauges for the river section you picked, and your IP address. No location from your phone is sent.USGS Privacy Policies
NOAA / National Weather Service water prediction APISame as aboveA request for fixed public gauge forecasts and your IP address. No location from your phone is sent.NWS Privacy · NOAA Privacy
Links that open in your browser or another app (YouTube videos, lesson sources, PA Fish & Boat Commission rules, weather.gov, the USGS gauge page, the OpenStreetMap copyright page)Only when you tap a linkThe app gives the link to your browser or the YouTube app. Videos aren't embedded or auto-played in the app. That site's own privacy policy applies, for example Google/YouTube.See each site

The app's fonts, lure illustrations, fish art, lessons and map code are built into the app. They aren't loaded from the internet.

Sharing is always your choice

  • Catch cards and challenge cards: when you tap Share, Android's share sheet opens and you choose where the card goes. Catch cards show species, size, the lure and its picture (your own lure photo if you saved one), and the date and time. Challenge cards can include the public Harrisburg river reading for that day. Neither one includes your location or the name of the water you fished.
  • Backups: Export backup creates a JSON file. It holds all your records, including spot and catch locations and photos, and you choose where it goes (Files, Drive, email and so on). Keep it somewhere private, because anyone with the file can read it. Import backup reads a file you pick, checks it, and asks you to confirm before anything is replaced.

Android device backup

[Craig: keep ONE of these two paragraphs, depending on the setting in the final build. See PLAY-DATA-SAFETY.md.]

(If Android backup stays ON, which is the current default): If you've turned on Android's own backup for your phone, Android may include this app's data in your device backup to your Google account. That backup is run by Google under your account and settings, not by us, and we can't access it. You can turn it off in Android Settings under Google, then Backup.

(If Android backup is turned OFF in the build): The app opts out of Android's automatic cloud backup, so your records stay on this phone unless you export them yourself.

Children

Susky Built is a general-audience fishing app. It isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children. If you think a child has sent us personal information by email, contact info@suskybuilt.com and we'll delete it.

Deleting your data

Because your data lives on your phone, you're in control of it:

  • Delete everything: uninstall the app, or go to Android Settings, then Apps, then Susky Built, then Storage, then Clear storage. Either one removes all records, photos, safety copies and saved forecasts or river reports from the phone.
  • Start over in the app: Settings, then Start empty clears your current entries after you type a confirmation. The app still keeps its previous-save safety copy and stored photo files on the phone until you clear storage or uninstall.
  • Backups you exported are your files. Delete them wherever you saved them.
  • Data held by outside services (their server logs) is controlled by them. See their privacy policies above.
  • We hold no data about you, so there's nothing for us to delete. If you have questions, email info@suskybuilt.com.

Planned feature: newsletter sign-up (not active yet)

A future version may offer an optional sign-up for the Susky Built newsletter, run by the email service Kit. This feature is off in the current app. If we turn it on:

  • It will appear only after you agree to open the sign-up page.
  • You'll enter your name and email on Kit's sign-up page, not in the app. The app itself won't collect or send your email address.
  • Kit will handle your subscription and the unsubscribe link in every email, under Kit's Privacy Policy.
  • We'll update this policy before the feature goes live.

Security

Your records are stored in the app's private storage, which Android isolates from other apps. Requests to online services use HTTPS. Your phone's screen lock is the best protection for the data on it. Treat exported backup files like any private document.

Changes to this policy

If the app's data practices change, for example when the newsletter is turned on, we'll update this page and the effective date above before the change ships. Big changes will also be noted in the app's release notes.
